  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Allan -- Fabulous book -- mandatory reading for all writers! : This is beautifully written book is vitally necessary for anyone setting out to write stories. Ever since Homer, the hero figure has been explored in endless variations. And ever since Joseph Campbell's work caught on in Hollywood, the "hero's journey" pattern has been drilled into our heads as the singular template for story. The heroine figure, on the other hand, represents unexplored territory that's wide open to writers. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from callie b -- Sad effort toward modern relevance : I have always been a big fan of Maria Tatar. I am also a fan of Joseph Campbell. I find myself wondering why Tatar felt she needed to frame this current piece of scholarship as a criticism of Joseph Campbell. Strangely, Tatar frames Campbell’s discussion of the hero journey as a strictly gendered path (because the stories and mythologies Campbell referenced were stories like the Odyssey, the Iliad etc.). Did anyone reading Campbell believe, because it was called the “hero” journey and not the “heroine” journey, that this was a metaphorical path for men alone? Tatar references Star Wars in the introduction, so I will, too. Luke was on a hero journey, and so too was Leia. I certainly did not understand the “hero” as a strictly gendered figure—that would have seemed reductive. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lauren Simpson -- Heroines on a Mission using curiosity and care to secure justice : Heroine with 1,001 Faces shows how female characters have never been able to embark on Joseph Campbell's journey, at least not on foot. It develops a new set of tropes for what it means to be “heroic.” It ranges from myth and fairy tale to fiction and film, drawing on everything from Homer and Ovid to Louisa May Alcott and Stieg Larsson. Tatar's theory of heroism highlights curiosity and compassion and shows how the fight for justice is more important than a bid for immortality. Erudite but also fun and engaging.
